Mother and Lamb

Curled wire. Currently on show at the LBT Artist in Residence Exhibition until 11June 2016.

Some of my my new work is all about balance. Using wire (as usual) I have created delicate pieces of work with the essence of freedom yet attached or hung. The weight of the piece is counterbalanced by the shape of the wire.

My Memories

Watching my bedridden Great Great Aunt making an everyday handkerchief, made beautiful by the addition of the surround. A light filigree of lace cotton given a touch of luxury made by a process called 'Tatting'.
A single thread looped and joined. An old and wondrous skill.
My own work with wire has grown from these traditions. The movement of the wire maintaining the natural yet anticipating the transitory nature of life. Observing the ordinary and making it special.

Wire gleaned from the old Palace theatre in Huddersfield. In it's found state it already had movement and flow. I could feel its resistance and latent energy.
The horse embodies the qualities and characteristics of the material while emphasising the grace of the animal.
A new way for me - using found material and discovering how to use it.
